Are there any cheap CB radios that are also reliable?
Yes, there are a few cheap CB radio setups available that can get the job done without breaking the bank, CB radio on a budget can be done but you need to shop carefully. Selecting the right equipment from the start is essential or you will wind up paying a lot more down the road.
How cheap can you go?
I have set myself a budget of $100 to get all of the items needed to set up a mobile CB radio system. It is possible to get everything for less than that but I wouldn’t advise it. Buying used CB radios is not a good idea unless you know exactly what you are doing. I only recommend equipment that I have used and know that it is reliable when installed and used properly. When your life may depend on this, don’t be tempted to sacrifice reliability for saving a few dollars.
Would a more expensive system be more reliable?
Probably, but there is no guarantee that just because you spend more money your CB radio setup will be any more reliable. A more expensive system will likely perform better also but you may not need itt depending on your situation. At the end of the day, it is up to you to decide how much you can spend and exactly what your needs are. Whatever you choose I urge you to get yourself a Reliable Communications Plan in place as soon as possible.
There is really nothing wrong with buying a used radio, I've bought plenty and never had an issue. I kinda prefer to buy the bone stock ones, that have never been opened, never been hacked on, stay with a simple AM 40 channel. Ive bought vintage radios that have alot of miles on them, a good cleaning, and careful testing, the pots can be like powder, depending on your skills, they can be great radios. One thing I stay away from is a used mike, I really don't want to put somebody else's spit and slobber up next to my mouth...If I sell a radio it's without the mike.
